Tournament Format and Scoring
Format
For the qualification and ranking rounds, the adopted system is
the Swiss Rounds format, but it is applied not to individual
players but to pools of two or three players.
To begin, 3 groups of players are formed (low, middle, top)
according to their points on blokus.com as of June 11, 2008.
Pools of 3 players, 1 from each group, are randomly formed. If
the total number of participants is not a multiple of three,
there will be one or two pools of two players.
In every pool, each player plays one game with blue-red and one
game with yellow-green, each game with a different opponent.
Top group player yellow-green vs. Low group player blue-red
Middle group player yellow-green vs. Top group player blue-red
Low group player yellow-green vs. Middle group player blue-red
For pools of two players, players play a game and switch colours
for second game.
Players who are not playing at a given time can thus take a
pause, refresh, but their role will also be to check that the
ongoing game proceeds correctly.
When the first round is over, everybody is ranked in a general
system with the scoring system explained below. If two players
are tied, then the player with greatest total of both games will
be ranked higher. If they are still tied the younger player is
ranked above the older player.
3 new groups are formed according to points earned in round 1.
For example, lets say there are 15 players. Group 1 would be
formed with the leading 5 players, group 2 with the following 5
and group 3 with the last 5. Pools of three players are
constituted so all pools have a player from each group:
Example:
pool 1 : players ranked # 1, 6, 11
pool 2 : players ranked # 2, 7, 12
pool 3 : players ranked # 3, 8, 13
pool 4 : players ranked # 4, 9, 14
pool 5 : players ranked # 5, 10, 15
If the total number of participants is not a multiple of three,
Group 3 would be the smaller group and pool 5 (and pool 4 if
necessary) would be formed with 2 players from the 2 groups
left.
Example:
pool 1 : players ranked # 1, 6, 11
pool 2 : players ranked # 2, 7, 12
pool 3 : players ranked # 3, 8, 13
pool 4 : players ranked # 4, 9, 14
pool 5 : players ranked # 5, 10
The second round may then proceed as the first, each player
playing a game with blue-red and a game with yellow-green,
against different opponents. The points won in these two games
are then added to those won in the first round, and the general
ranking system is refreshed to determine new groups and new
pools for the third round, and so on. At the end of the fourth
round, all eight games played by each player are taken in
consideration for the final ranking of the qualification phase.
Final phase may proceed.
Final phase
The first player will play a semi-final against player ranked
fourth. Two games are played, one with each colour (the order in
which the games will be played will be determined by random).
The player ranked second will do the same against the player
ranked third. Raw scores of both games are added to determine
the winners who will meet in the final game.
The winners of the semi-finals will meet in the final game, and
the losers in the “little final” game to determine 3rd and 4th
place.
Playing Time
Allowed time for each player (to play both colours) is 20
minutes.
If a player’s time, as indicated by the clock, is passed, the
player will not be able to play anymore. His opponent continues
until his own time is spent.
Scoring for any particular game
In Blokus rules scoring is based on the difference in total
squares played by both players, with extra points awarded for
bonus. However because blue-red has an advantage over
yellow-green the following scoring will be used.
Let S be the score of the game as is computed with the official
Blokus rules. It is a positive number if the blue-red player won
the game, and a negative number if the game was won by the
yellow-green player.
The mean score of games won by the blue-red player is between 18
and 19.
The mean score of games won by the yellow-green player is
between -12 and -13.
The handicap in favor of the blue-red player lies between 9 and
10.
The last three figures are statistical numbers estimated over a
large number of past Blokus games.
Points are attributed to the two players, depending on the score
S :
S equal or bigger than 19 : 50 points for blue-red, 0 for
yellow-green
S between 10 and 18 : 40 points for blue-red, 10 for
yellow-green
S between 1 and 9 : 30 points for blue-red, 20 for yellow-green
S = 0 (tie) : 20 points for blue-red, 30 for yellow-green
S between -12 and -1 : 10 points for blue-red, 40 for
yellow-green
S equal or lower than -13 : 0 points for blue-red, 50 for
yellow-green
To these are added the possible bonus points : 5 points for any
completed colour, plus 2 if the colour was completed with the
single square last. The maximum score a player can get in a game
is thus 64 (“quadruple bonus”).
